What is Your Average Stockpile Quantity?

Understanding how to properly stockpile is the backbone of The Coupon Wizards’ EXTREMEly effective couponing system.  You not only need to know the quantities of your staple items that you need to purchase at their associated stockpile price, you need to know the correct number of coupons you will need to procure in order to obtain your stockpile quantity.  We discuss stockpile price and stockpile quantity in other places on our site.  Now, we want you to take it one step further.

People ask me all the time “How many papers should I buy?” or “How many inserts does my family need?”.  Typically I give them the answer that is the standard rule of thumb, 2 sets for each member of your household.  For example, if you are a family of 5, you would need to purchase 10 papers each week to get started.  However, there is a mathematical way for your to determine exactly the number you need, thus the terms Average Stockpile Quantity.  In order to determine your Average Stockpile Quantity, you need to have completed the Stockpile Quantity Tracking sheet that is found our our website.  When you have completed the sheet (after 12 rigorous weeks), the real fun begins.  Add your total for each item tracked in the right hand margin.  This will tell you the total number of each item you consumed from your stockpile during that 12 week period.  Once you have your totals per item, add the sum total number of units that you tracked for the 12 week period.  In other words, if you tracked 10 items and you used 10 of each item, your total number of units consumed would be 100.

The next step is to determine the total number of items tracked.  You can do this by simply counting the number of line items that have entries where you tracked your consumption.  Using numbers from above, let’s say that you used 100 total units but you tracked 20 items.  You would simply take the sum total of items consumed (100) and divide it by 20.  Your answer would be 5.  This is your average stockpile quantity.  That means on average you use 5 of each item over 12 weeks.  Now you have some decisions to make.  You are using 5 of each item on average, so do you buy 4 papers, or do you buy 6 papers?  My recommendation is that you look at your numbers by item and see if there are any high or low numbers that are driving the average down.  If you hold true to the 5, I would always recommend buying 6 papers.  This way, you are able to cover your average stockpile needs with now problem.  If you only get 4, you may come up short.

While this is also not a perfect method, it is more accurate than “2 per family member”.  No matter how accurate you are in your counts, you will still have some items that you will be short on.  This is when you will want to consider using a clipping service.  More to come on clipping services in subsequent posts.  For now, break out your tracking sheet and let’s see how accurate you are on your Average Stockpile Quantity.
